Abstract: The production, research, and application of sorbents based on fossil coals for the extraction of valuable components from wastewater and technogenic formations is relevant. This work presents a study of the sorption activity of carbon sorbents based on brown coal, bituminous coal, and wood coal, as well as their modified samples. Modification was carried out by sulfonation using oleum with a concentration of 20% sulfur trioxide. The sorption activity of the initial carbon sorbents and their modified samples was studied, demonstrating the influence of sulfonation on their structural and sorption characteristics. The physicochemical characteristics of the initial carbon sorbents and their modified samples were examined, primarily focusing on pore structure, sorption activity toward standard substances (iodine and methylene blue), mechanical strength, and others. The research results showed that after modification, the total porosity measured by water absorption increases from 0.5 to 0.8 cm³/g, the iodine sorption capacity decreases by 18 to 27%, while the methylene blue sorption capacity increases. These changes in parameters indicate an increase in the number of mesopores, which are more effective at sorbing metal ions from solutions.
