Abstract: Production of coal in Germany will be finally ceased in 2018. Directly after the end of production a post-mining period (a post-mining phase) of the mining enterprises will begin. Elements and aspects of the post-mining period demand constant weighed decisions and an assessment of risks for future generations. The post-mining period highlights some tasks at closing (abandoning) of the mining enterprises: safety, reconstruction and subsequent use of territories. Special aspect is mine waters and their use. Whether the level of mine water outflow will increase at shutdown or will be there vital issues which could be improved by further pumping of mine waters? An important point is development of suitable concepts of monitoring. After sanitation of the industrial areas as per modern environmental standards further comprehensive use of these territories is possible as well as placement of the industrial enterprises, creation of renewables, improvement of ecological conditions for cultural and tourist use.
