Abstract: Geomechanical assessment of a new mining system version for South Western ore body in New Sheregesh site of Sheregesh iron ore mine has been made. In accordance with the mine modernization strategy, it is planned to implement room-and-pillar mining with staggered rooms and fenders. For such mining system, regular patterns of stress–strain state generation in rock mass in the vicinity of room-and-pillar work are found and indicate formation of zones of high stresses, exceeding ultimate compressive strength of ore, and inelastic strains, which may call for additional measures to be undertaken to maintain the mine safety. The authors propose an alternative scenario with the changed sequence of mining. The article reports estimates of stress–strain state under first-stage in-line advance of mining operations and next stage adjustment of mining sequence, which allows abating risk of inelastic strains in the ore body. One of the mining sequence variants is described.
