Abstract: The paper describes of calculation stress and deformed state of coal pillars by a finite element method. The computational area contains the following blocks: host rock, coal pillar, broken-down rock in mined-out space and area full displacement of roof. All the blocks were considered linearly-deformable. New method of numerical calculation of pillar state with allowance for behind limit deformation includes two stages. Distribution of rock pressure on coal pillar was obtained at first stage. These results were used for to find the length and deep area with straining after attainment ultimate compressive strength – with behind limit deformation. In the second stage additional zone with behind limit deformation was introduced in the edge of the coal pillar. The proposed method of calculation allows us to estimate the stress-strain state of pillar, find the maximum of bearing pressure and the distance to it.
