Abstract: This article presents the historical-cultural analysis of the scientific and applied work of Leonid Ivanovich Lugutin, one of the founders of the country’s coal geology. Until present, there has not been research conducted on this particular aspect of life of the mentioned innovator geologist. The theoretical foundation of this scientist’s inventions is viewed in the context of his scientific legacy filled with the humanistic content. The analysis of historical facts of Kuzbass geology research has allowed us to point to the fundamental and cultural importance of L.I. Lutugin’s personal input in the development of the coal industry of the region and on the geological science in general. This article also provides evidence for the conceptual relevance of studying L.I. Lutugin’s scientific heritage in contemporary society and professional culture.
