Abstract: The issue of  the increase of coal mining efficiency in Russia is under consideration. It is shown how reengineering of production systems of coal mining on the principles of «lean production» can reduce the level of production losses, raise cost-effective use of resources, provide high competitiveness and correspondingly sustainability of coal companies. However, achievement of the indicated results will require transformation of the basic approaches in designing and management of coal mining production systems.
