Abstract: The article presents actual problems, which are currently faced in the development of highly gas-bearing coal seams, namely, the decrease in coal output in the appearance of the gas barrier. It is noted that the desorption processes influence the change in the coal seam strength. This effect can adversely affect the safety of mining operations up to the occurrence of various gas dynamic phenomena. The paper presents the means and methods for prediction of gas content in the extraction panels of mines. It describes the procedure and places of the selection of coal samples for studies of gas evolution in the process of coal cutting. As an indicator characterizing the structuring of the coal in the process of its drilling, the ration Sуд/Пs is taken which shows how much the specific area of the pore space is higher than the surface of coal particles. This ratio encompasses the concept of surface-porous structure. The article presents the study of surface-porous structure of coal based on modern equipment designed to assess the thermobaric characteristics of coal and the specific surface area by BET method (Brunauer, Emmett and Taylor). It is established that the influence of the gas has a significant role in the formation of surface-porous structure in the process of coal breaking.
