Abstract: The article discloses the aspects of coordinated functioning of all constituents of earth pressure balance system in one tunnel boring machine for alluvial and mixed ground conditions: in unconsolidated non-homogeneous geological formations with high water table. The authors introduce the earth pressure balance sys-tem of one of rectangular TBMs, describe the design features of the elements of the balance system maintaining the stability of the face, give the guidelines for the correct choice of tunneling modes in various soil conditions. They also disclose the major working principles of systems for feeding foam, bentonite and polymers to control the face pressure and prevent subsidence and emergency situations, and they present as well the layout scheme of all assemblies and units on board of a tunnel boring machine and on the surface.
Key words: surface of the day grunt loading chamber face EPB shield becoming foam generator
