Abstract: The article presents the results of an assessment of the currently existing methods for calculating the length of mechanized longwalls in high-performance mining of coal seams by the underground method. At the same time, mainly the most significant methods are considered, taking into account such factors as the minimum specific reduced costs for the preparation and development of excavation pillars, the optimal performance of the working face, the features of the manifestation of rock pressure, the technical capabilities of the shearer and the feed rate of the shearer when extracting coal. Of the existing methods, the method for determining the length of a mechanized longwall for a given production face and the technical capability of a longwall shearer is recommended for practical use. The dependences of the feed rate of the combines on the resistance of coal to cutting are considered for a group of combines currently being produced with the most presented indicators for the installed power of their drive. This method for determining the required longwall length is based on the use of indicators of a given production face and a longwall advance rate per day, and therefore it is considered relatively difficult, but the approach to this issue itself was chosen correctly. On the basis of the established methodological provisions, recommendations have been developed for the choice of a rational length and speed of movement of a working face of a complex-mechanized longwall with high-performance development of reserves of seam 50 in the conditions of the mine named after V.D. Yalevsky JSC SUEK-Kuzbass. In order to establish the actual efficiency, the possibility of practical use and expand the field of application of this method, it is required to carry out volumetric mine and laboratory studies in various mining and geological conditions of the development of coal reserves.
