Abstract: Concentrates of coal from the Kuznetsk Basin, which form the basis of the charge for coking, have been investigated in order to establish the relationship between the mechanical strength of coke and the sum of the lean components of the coal. It is shown that one of the main parameters used in Russia to classify coals and evaluate them as raw materials for coke production, the thickness of the plastic layer (Y, mm) decreases almost linearly with an increase in the amount of lean components (∑ОК,%).The free swelling index (SI), as an indicator of coal sintering, changes with the stage of metamorphism and significantly depends on the petrographic composition, decreasing with an increase in the amount of lean components. It was found that the Roga index (RI), which serves as an indicator of sintering capacity based on the characteristics of the mechanical strength of the non-volatile residue obtained by rapid heating (at 850 °C) of a mixture of coal and reference anthracite, significantly decreases with an increase in the amount of lean components. The results obtained for determining the sintering capacity of coals by various methods, depending on the amount of lean components, can serve for calculating the charge and predicting the quality of coke.
