Abstract: Underground mining is often accompanied by accidents associated with the collapse of rocks due to a decrease in the stability of rock outcrops, especially during the construction of preparatory mine workings. And such phenomena occur because of the fact that the construction of mine workings is made without due regard for the structure and physical properties of the host rocks and geomechanical processes occurring in the rock masses, which should always be considered. Therefore, it is very important to study the conditions of formation of disturbance zones in the outcrop massif and to develop measures to prevent such phenomena, ensuring the stability of rock outcrops. For this purpose, we conducted a study of the composition, structure, texture, determination of the complex of physical properties of rocks by the laboratory method, as well as field observations of the stability of rock outcrops in mine workings in a number of coal mines of Kuzbass. The article presents the results of studies of strength parameters and structural heterogeneities of rocks in the Kuznetsk coal basin and the nature of their changes under long-term loads, the presence of macro defects leading to contact weakening of layers. The water-physical properties of rocks influencing their strength indicators were investigated, as well as the influence of the shape and size of the mine cross-section on the stability of rock outcrops.
