Abstract: Transportless (direct dumping) overburden removal technology remains one of the most productive and resource-efficient methods for moving overburden into the mined-out area in open-pit coal mining. Its significance is determined by the presence of horizontal or gently dipping seams – whether single or multi-seam – large volumes of overburden, and a consistent need to reduce the cost of overburden removal while maintaining an acceptable rate of advance at the mining face. The classical methodological framework for calculating the parameters of direct dumping mining schemes was developed based on the mining of single horizontal and gently dipping seams. It examines in detail the options for excavation and re-excavation of overburden (simple and complex schemes), the effect of the dragline’s position and elevation on the re-excavation coefficient, as well as the principles for selecting an optimal scheme structure depending on the mining-geometric conditions of the quarry field. At the same time, later studies have noted that the limits of the rational application of direct dumping technology cannot be determined solely by a traditional comparison of the costs of transport and transportless overburden removal without an in-depth consideration of re-excavation. A method was proposed for determining the boundary between zones based on the layer-specific re-excavation coefficient, which in itself indicates the need to further develop the initial methodological framework. In recent years, the scope of tasks has expanded significantly. Engineering literature discusses multi-tiered internal dumps, the preparation of initial capacity for an internal dump without the need for transport, deep-cut continuous and transverse mining systems, as well as options for using draglines on inclined and steep seams. Consequently, the principles of the classical methodology must be adapted to more complex mining-geological and organizational-technological conditions.
